Favorite Story

It was shortly after Governor Hickel left office (the 2nd time) – I was flying down to Juneau for business – early morning flight. I was in 1C – Wally and Irmalee were in 1 D F (back when we got food in First Class) – we were enjoying our breakfast (on REAL china) – we were in a weather hold over Juneau – fog – go figure! We’re still eating when the Pilot came on the PA to say that a “company jet” (meaning Alaska Airlines) was taking off – and IF he got out ok, we’d follow behind and land. Being the ONLY two jets in the sky over Juneau, it seemed pretty safe. We’re still eating our hot breakfast (yes, it used to happen) when all of the sudden we went down and right (quickly) – apparently the the other jet DID take off and found our airspace. China jumped from our trays and there was a few broken pieces – From 1D I hear the very proper Irmalee nearly whisper, yet I heard it, a mild “Oh shit”. To this day, this remains my favorite Wally & Irmalee story. I may have not always agreed with Wally, but I can say for fact he had, and continues to have, the best intent for the state of Alaska.
