Dear Wally,
Sue and I are enormously disappointed that we could not be with you, Ermalee, your family, and friends at this celebration of your 90th birthday.
What you have given to Alaska and the Nation with your vision, energy and integrity cannot be measured just by words.
That which you give to young people as a mentor – not of facts – but of values and as an example of how to lead one’s life, is beyond words.
As Secretary of the Interior it was, as a young man, my privilege to serve with you.
In the development of every young person there are certain “older” figures who stand out as having made a critical difference in our lives and you were one of mine.
Sue joins me in thanking you for that which you gave me and so many others.

Dear Governor Hickel,
Happy Birthday! For years I would see you every morning for 7am Mass at Holy Family Cathedral. I prayed for you often and remember thinking on more than one occasion…”he is sure starting his day in the right place, for whatever important decisions he will be making today.” Thank you for being a model of faith for me, and demonstrating that you turned to God every day for guidance, strength and nourishment.
